School helps students grieve after death of kindergartner

MURRAY, KY -

Bulmaro Arellano, Marisol Hernandez and their two children were killed in a fire earlier this week.

Kentucky State Police believe the fire is suspicious and are investigating it as an arson.

The Calloway County coroner says while autopsies are complete, he is still waiting on the results.

Principal Kathy Crouch says the sudden death of one of their kindergarten students is taking a toll on both the students and staff at East Calloway Elementary School.

"When you lose anyone a child, especially that young, we just had a lot of sadness across the building yesterday," says Crouch.

School counselor Joy Cox says when they heard about the boy's death, they quickly formed a crisis team and created a plan to help grieving students.

"I think it's hard for students that are 5 years old and 6 years old to understand about death," says Cox.

Which is why the school placed calls notifying the parents first.

"They were just really glad that we did that," says Crouch. "Giving that personal touch to those parents meant of a lot to them."

On Thursday, classmates sat down as a group and shared memories about their lost friend.

"It has affected the whole school," says Crouch.

In front of the school, the American flag flies at half staff to remember the young family that lost their lives.

The school says it's taking this one day at a time because it affects each student differently.

They plan to hold a memorial service in a few months.
