While hundreds of people around Herrin, Illinois pour in to the Elks Lodge for the community meal this Thanksgiving, others who are unable to join in the fun are still getting a meal and it’s all thanks to help from volunteers.
On a day for giving thanks, many community members around Herrin are doing just that, they’re thanking the people who are personally delivering them their Thanksgiving dinner.
"I've never been in this situation before. And now that I have somebody that can come and give us food like this, it's just sensational,” said Cathy Rigdon, a Herrin community member getting a Thanksgiving dinner delivered.
"I appreciate it ever so much,” said William Mays, a Herrin community member getting a Thanksgiving dinner delivered.
The dozens of volunteers out dropping off the meals aren’t just driving Thanksgiving to these people, they’re helping make every course and forkful that winds up in each box. After cooking and scooping and serving all morning, hundreds of meals are headed out to the community.
"It's really meaningful and we're really grateful for what they're doing here. It really touches our heart, thank you," said Shaye Morgan, a Herrin community member getting a Thanksgiving dinner delivered.
But it’s not just the people receiving the meals that are giving thanks.
"It's a really good feeling that I'm helping people out and delivering their dinner to them ," said Ray Hampton, a sixth grader in Herrin out delivering the meals with her mom on Thursday.
Ray says she’ll be back next Thanksgiving, ready to lend a hand on the holidays for those in need
The Herrin community has provided free meals for anyone who wants one on Thanksgiving since 1988.
