LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -

A 14-year-old from Lexington has set a world record in a Rubik's Cube competition.

Henry Clay High School ninth-grader Lucas Etter solved the 3x3 cube in 4.90 seconds at a World Cube Association-sponsored competition in Maryland last weekend. Guinness World Records confirmed on its website that Lucas set a world record and is the first person to break the 5-second barrier.

Lucas told the Lexington Herald-Leader he started playing with the Rubik's Cube when he was about 8 and practices about an hour a day. He says he memorizes the algorithms, or sequences of moves.

The Guinness Report said Lucas also set a record two months ago for a 2x2x2 Rubik's Cube.

His mother, Dana Mendenhall-Etter, says her son's feat is the product of more than four years of practice and determination.
