Road closure planned Tuesday for Eggners Ferry Bridge work

Posted: Updated:

A contractor plans to place the main span on the new U.S. 68/Kentucky 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge at Aurora, Kentucky on Tuesday, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says a contractor has determined that weather conditions on Tuesday should allow crews to move of the 550-foot steel arch. U.S. 68/KY 80 will be closed at the construction site starting around 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The closure is expected to be in place for up to 24 hours.

The closure will run from the US 68/KY 80 intersection at Aurora in Marshall County, extending eastward through the construction area for the new bridge to near the Trace in Land Between The Lakes National Recreation area in Trigg County, Todd says.

Todd says the required detour via Interstate 24 and the Purchase Parkway will add 42 miles, and roughly 40 minutes, to a trip between Cadiz and Murray.

Winds will need to be less than 10 miles per hour Tuesday to move the 5.1 million-pound truss, Todd says, adding that Tuesday's forecast calls for winds at 8 miles per hour out of the west.

Todd said in addition to the road closure at the bridge site on Tuesday, all boat traffic on Kentucky Lake/the Tennessee River will be halted at the construction site for up to 48 hours. There'll be a 2,000-foot clear zone around the construction site during the critical move, starting at 7 a.m., Tuesday.
