Are 4K TVs worth the higher cost?

Posted: Updated:

When I was a kid, my mom would yell "You're sitting too close to the TV. You're going to ruin your eyes!"

Well mom, TV makers are encouraging us all to sit closer to see everything on these 4K TVs.

Not to get too technical, but a 4K TV has roughly four times the number of pixels, so it's clearer and smoother. But, according to many HD experts, you have to sit close to the screen to notice a difference.

How close?

Sony says you must sit between 5 and 6 feet away from the TV to fully appreciate the extra pixels. And, you can now sit as close as 3.5 feet without seeing a pixel.

Who sits that close? And, while there isn't much of a difference watching a 4K TV from 9 feet away, there is a difference in price. A 40 inch Samsung 4K TV is 750 —practically the same 1080 set is at nearly $300 cheaper.

But, seeing or not seeing pixels is just part of the difference, according to Jody Lester, a sales consultant for Best Buy.

"Not only is resolution a big part, but 4K also has extended colors. So, while you may not be able to see every pixel, you may be able to see greater details from what the pixels are able to make out. "

Right now there aren't many TV shows and no DVDs that support 4K video. That's certainly going to change. New 4K DVD players will be released in January.
