#Racerholidays gives students more scholarships

Posted: Updated:

The cost of tuition is on the rise, but a local university is using crowdfunding on social media to help with those costs.

It’s Murray State University’s dunker’s challenge. This year, the goal is to get students to raise $3,000 this week, then challenge faculty and staff to match that. MSU will challenge alumni to match that $6,000 total the third week of December. That $12,000 will be divided into 24 $500-scholarships.

Tori Wood says she love her university. She hopes to get all her friends on board to donate to the dunker’s challenge and plans to give, herself. “I know if I didn't have my scholarships, I would not be close to where I am today at all,” Wood said.

Wood knows the more students give, the more inventive that will give faculty and alumni. They hope 300 students will have back $10 each to meet their goal. And in order to win a scholarship next year, a student has to chip in and be a full-time student this year. Randy Black, professor of music, says he knows how much scholarships help him. He says they send a strong message and that they mean “you are a person of value, and we want to invest in your success."

"And I want to be a part of that,” Black added.
