City leaders support second yearly quilt show in Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky -

The city of Paducah is committing to double its support to $50,000 a year to the American Quilter's Society.

The money will help in the marketing and creation of a second yearly quilt show. For the past five years, the American Quliters' Society has been talking about adding another quilt show in Paducah.

The ground breaking of the Holiday Inn project in downtown Paducah this year helped give that idea momentum.

About 30,000 visitors come every April for the current quilt show. During Tuesday’s commission meeting, Mayor Gayle Kaler said she thinks it will be an equal number in the fall.

City Manager Jeff Pederson added it doubles the benefit amount of convention space used per year.

“It provides a greater return for the investment the community has and will continue to have in convention space,” Pederson said.

The support of funding means it’s now up to AQS to make a game plan for the second quilt show's first year in September of 2017.

AQS co-founder Meredith Schroeder said she's happy and excited to start working with the city to make a second quilt show.

Since 2008, the city has provided an annual incentive of $25,000 for the quilt show. The second show would start in 2017 every September at least until 2019
