Parents react to Lourdes Child Care Center closing

PADUCAH, Ky -

On average, 117 kids stay at Lourdes Child Care Center. Tuesday, parents said they found out it's closing next month.

Lourdes said 77 percent of families losing their kids day care at Lourdes Child Care work for Lourdes hospital.

Nurse Jana Williams recently got off the center's waiting list and now needs to start looking again.

“Shocked, disappointed. The kids love it, actually. Today was the first day that he wasn't upset, he told me bye,” Williams said.

A daycare can be harder to find for hospital employees like Tara McKinney. Their hours aren't typically 9 to 5.

“Sometimes our schedules can get crazy busy, and they're okay with keeping them an extra 30 minutes,” McKinney said.

Tiffany Bailey says it'll be hard to find quality care that stays open late enough to fit their needs.

“They know we have to get to the hospital. They know we can't just take a snow day,” Bailey said.

A statement provided by Lourdes President and CEO Steven Grinnel said closing is necessary, with declining reimbursements and an increase in the number of patients. A number of childcare positions were also eliminated, which upsets McKinney and Bailey.

"They've become like our family for the last five years,” Bailey said.

Grinnel’s statement said Lourdes is committed to working with these individuals to explore other employment opportunities within Lourdes and Mercy Health. As for the parents, they have until Jan. 29 to find new care.

“Not much notice for the amount of kids that go to the day care, and trying to find another daycare, most have a wait list that’s months long,” McKinney said.

Grinnel added in that statement that, although the decisions being made are difficult, they believe the changes will position Lourdes and Mercy Health to provide high-quality care for future generations.

The current Lourdes Child Care Center manager is opening their own daycare: West End Kids Academy. It has 85 open full-time spots.

I called several others centers that can take about the same number of children. Baptist Health is open until 8 p.m., but has a waiting list. Paducah Day Nursey also has a waiting list.

Kids Kare Too has openings, and Olivet 4 Kids has openings for 3- to 4-year-old kids and school-age children.
