MURRAY, KY -

A Calloway County music teacher took his passion for the arts and made it into a career.  Todd Terry is an alumni of Murray State University and teaches preschool through 5th grade music at East Calloway Elementary School.  He lets his students know that his classroom is where music happens.

"It's the best job in the world," said Terry.

Terry plays his ukulele and whistles songs before his students enter the classroom.

"When they are in the hallway and coming down to my room, this is the place where music happens," said Terry.

Terry does have an assistant, Mr. Puccini, the hand puppet.  Mr. Puccini helps Terry explain the lesson of the day.  On this particular day, Mr. Puccini explains form in music.  Form is how the piece of music is put together creating a pattern.  Mr. Puchini explains it by way of cooking lasagna, layering the sauce, noodles and cheese over and over again.

Terry says arts in a public school not only helps students with their other subjects, but it prepares them for life.

"It is important because it teaches the skills of creativity, collaboration, communication, public performance, public speaking, problem solving and those to me are skills we want to equip our students with," said Terry.

For Kindergarten, it's about shaking egg shakers and riding on candy cane horses to different section of a classical piece called "The Nutcracker."  It's what happens over time the drives Terry.

"To see those confidence levels go up it means the world to me," said Terry.

Once a week, students get to enjoy the world of music. Calloway County school system has made it a mission to have a certified arts teacher in every school building for their programs.
