Syrian army says it killed rebel commander

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) -

Syrian officials say the Syrian army was responsible for today's death of a top rebel commander near the Syrian capital. It was a blow to the forces fighting against the government of Bashar Assad.
The rebel leader headed one of the most powerful insurgent groups that have the backing of Saudi Arabia.
One activist group earlier said it was Russia that had carried out a deadly airstrike against the rebel leader.
The death of Zahran Allouch comes a month before expected peace talks between government and opposition representatives in Geneva.
His group controls large parts of the Damascus suburbs.
