Teenager accused of shooting Mounds, IL police officer now charged as an adult

A Mounds, Illinois teenager accused of shooting a police officer is now being charged as an adult.

On Thursday, 17-year-old Nigel Williams was charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer and aggravated battery of a police officer with a firearm.

Williams was originally charged as a juvenile. He is accused of shooting and injuring Mounds, Illinois police officer Lyle Womack on July 8, 2015.

The officer was shot while investigating a home break in. The two exchanged gunfire and Williams ran away after Womack was hit.

Williams was arrested after he was released from a local hospital. He had gone to the hospital to get treatment for a minor gunshot wound.

The charges were filed in Pulaski County.
