A new survey, revealed by the Associate Press, shows some doctors need a clearer understanding of reasons to vaccine preteens against the Human Papillomavirus The publication "Pediatrics" printed the survey findings, which show pediatricians and family doctors are not strongly recommending the HPV vaccine to preteens and their parents.

Doctors and pediatricians say they did not request the vaccine to their patients and patients' parents because they either did not believe the patient was having sex or that the parents would object.

Health officials say the vaccine works best if kids get it before they become sexually active. About 1/3 of all young people have had sex by the age of 16.

A national survey last year found that 60 percent of adolescent girls and only 42 percent of boys had gotten at least one dose of the vaccine. Three doses are recommended.
