PADUCAH, KY -

Paducah leaders approved a municipal order to apply for a federal grant to benefit local firefighters during Tuesday's board of commissioners meeting.

City spokeswoman Pam Spencer says the city is requesting a $86,580 Assistance to Firefighters Grant is through the Department of Homeland Security.  The grant would require a $9,620 match from the city.

The grant would be used so Paducah could be host site for a fire ground survival training program, including the purchase of training materials and equipment. Spencer says that's a train-the-trainer program. The funding also would be used to train 20 firefighters. "The program trains firefighters to perform potentially life-saving actions if they become lost, disoriented, injured, low on air, or trapped," Spencer said.
