Republicans hope to minimize risk in 2016 House elections

FRANKFORT, KY (AP) -

The Republican state lawmaker in charge of recruiting state House candidates says he hopes more people filing for office will give the party a better chance of winning a majority.

State Rep. Jonathan Shell said Republicans lost in 2014 not only on Election Day, but on filing deadline day because they did not have enough candidates signed up to challenge Democrats. Shell, from Lancaster, is in charge of recruiting candidates for the 2016 elections and said he has driven more than 30,000 miles trying to find people willing to run for office.

So far, 29 Republicans have filed for open seats or to challenge Democratic incumbents in 25 races. Shell says more are coming.

House Democrats say they are confident their incumbents can win, just like they did in 2014.
