PULASKI Co, IL -

A 17-year-old charged with shooting a Mounds, Illinois police officer was released from custody.

Nigel Williams is accused of shooting Officer Lyle Womack on July 8, 2015.

On Tuesday, Pulaski County State's Attorney James Flummer said they had to release Williams from custody because of speedy trial provisions.

The provisions state that if a defendant is incarcerated beyond the time allowed in the provisions, the charges must be dismissed.

Flummer says they released Williams to make sure that did not happen.

Williams is charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer and aggravated battery of a police officer with a firearm.

A trial is set for February 22, 2016.
