Be On The Lookout: Police pass along warning after car break-ins

Posted: Updated:
CADIZ, Ky -

We have a warning Tuesday night from police in Cadiz about a series of car break-ins.

They happened over the weekend of Jan. 9 in the area of Nunn Boulevard, Cunningham Avenue and Sunset Circle. In each case, police say the car doors were unlocked.

Police are offering this advice to help you protect your belongings and prevent yourself from becoming a target for criminals:

1.) Lock all your car doors. You need to do this even if you're only going to be gone for a few seconds. Police say that's all it takes for a criminal to steal from you.

2.) Don't leave your valuables in the car. It sounds like common sense, but police say drivers and passengers do this all the time.

3.) Leave no trace. Don't leave any sign that you might have valuables hidden in your car. So, hide docking stations, phone chargers and connector cables.

4.) Try to park in busy, well-lit areas.

5.) Here are some of the most commonly stolen items from cars: backpacks; gym bags; briefcases; day-planners; cash/coins; checkbooks; credit/debit cards; wallets and purses; laptop computers; iPods; MP3 players; cell phones (and chargers); portable GPS navigation systems; stereo/CD players (and faceplates); amps; speakers; jewelry; medication.

If you see suspicious activity, Cadiz Police and other law enforcement agencies urge you to contact them. Here are some examples: someone walking up and down the street and/or parking lots looking into cars or trying door handles; vehicles cruising the street and/or parking lots at very slow speeds for extended periods while observing parked cars; someone making any kind of mark or placing anything on parked vehicles; someone sitting in running parked cars for extended periods; vehicles dropping one person off while continuing to cruise the same area.

If you have any information about the car break-ins in Cadiz, contact the department at 270-522-8888.
