The storms, and flooding that followed, led to 15 deaths and destroyed or significantly damaged nearly 1,000 homes.
In his request to President Obama, Nixon asked for Individual Assistance and help from the Small Business Administration.
Individual Assistance will allow eligible residents in 41 Missouri counties the opportunity to apply for federal assistance. This could include help with temporary housing and replace household items damaged or lost due to flooding.
Assistance from the Small Business Administration would help businesses in those same counties.
Nixon says the state is still doing damage assessments to determine the costs for state and local governments.
A state of emergency was declared in Missouri on December 27.
