Abortion-related bill shows strength in Ky. House

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -

Lawmakers have made more progress with a bill that would require women in Kentucky to have a face-to-face meeting with a medical professional at least 24 hours before having an abortion.

In a procedural motion, Kentucky House members voted 72-11 Wednesday to give the bill its first reading.

It's a preliminary step for the bill, which hasn't been referred to committee and needs two more readings before it could be voted on by the House.

House Republican Leader Jeff Hoover says it's part of a strategy to expedite action on the bill to update the state's informed-consent law. It passed the GOP-led Senate on a 32-5 vote Tuesday.

For years, bills seeking to restrict access to abortion have died in the Democratic-run House.
