Water rates may increase for some southern Illinois residents

CAIRO, IL -

Some Local 6 residents may soon have to pay more for water and sewer.

Illinois American Water filed an application on Thursday asking the state's Commerce Commission to raise their rates.

The rate increase will impact customers of the Cairo District and Hardin County Water District.

If approved, the average customer will have to pay about $7.57 more per month.

Cairo District Superintendent Mike Brown says the money will be used to replace and install fire hydrants, valves, meters, and 2,500 feet of water main.

If the Illinois Commerce Commission approves the request, rates would not change until January 2017.
