A boil order affecting a large area of southern Illinois has been reissued after it was lifted Friday morning.
A water main break led the initial boil order to be issued for Elizabethtown, Cave-In-Rock, Herod, Equality, and Junction. A spokesperson with Illinois American Water says that water main unfortunately experienced another break soon after the order was lifted. The new boil order is expected to be in effect for 36 to 48 hours.
The spokesperson said the break is in the Saline Valley Conservancy distribution system, before the Illinois American connection. Illinois American purchases water from them.
Illinois American Water says customers in the affected area should bring their water to a rolling boil for five minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. The water is OK for bathing, washing and other common uses.
The utility says it's issuing the boil order in accordance with Illinois EPA regulations. It says any time water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch in any part of a distribution system, a boil order has to be issued as a precaution to protect customers.
