A man arrested after a Knoxville high school student was killed shielding friends from gunfire told police he fired into the group of teenagers with a .40-caliber Glock handgun.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports details of the shooting that killed 15-year-old Zaevion Dobson were revealed at a court hearing Friday.
Police say 20-year-old Christopher Bassett and two others went to the housing development where Dobson and friends were gathered Dec. 17. With Bassett was Brandon Perry, whose mother was shot earlier that night. Police say Bassett and the others mistakenly targeted the teens in retaliation. Perry was killed hours later in a separate shooting.
Bassett was arrested on a weapons charge, but Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch said Wednesday authorities are seeking a homicide indictment.
President Barack Obama praised Dobson's heroism in remarks on gun violence earlier this month.
