Shooting kills one, injures another in LaCenter

A man is in jail in Ballard County, accused of shooting and killing one woman and injuring another.

Kentucky State Police charged Shaquille Edwards with shooting and killing 18-year-old Theresa Hughes. KSP says 21-year-old Caitlin Houston was shot in the leg.

Police say this happened overnight, around 3 a.m. on Locust Street in LaCenter. Family and neighbors say they were shocked to hear gunshots and want to know what happened.

A neighbor says five gunshots woke him up in the middle of the night. Jerry Campbell says he never expected this in his town. When he found out his friend and neighbor Theresa Hughes was the one who died, he was even more shocked. "Her mom was outside yelling and screaming," he says. "They wouldn't let her go inside to see her daughter, but they carried her out in body bags this morning."

Friends and family crowded the street, and Gayle Mitchell says the shooting was family against family. She says her cousin, Shaquille Edwards, destroyed several lives by shooting their cousin Theresa Hughes and his girlfriend, Caitlin Houston.

Mitchell says she watched Theresa grow up and that she didn't deserve to die.  "I've never known her to hurt anyone, raise her voice," she says. "I've never known her to be in a fight."

Police say when the Ballard County Sheriff's Office drove up on this street, deputies found Edwards outside, who surrendered without any problems.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Michael Robichaud says they do not know the motive behind the two murder charges, with the investigation still in its early stages.

"They're processing everything. They're still trying to determine everything," Robichaud says.

But, friends and family looking on all day say they still want answers.

Kentucky State Police charged Edwards with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, kidnapping, and burglary. He's in the Ballard County Jail, without bond. Caitlin Houston is in stable condition at Baptist Health Paducah.
