Illinois Democrats vying for US Senate talk up experience, background

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (AP) -

The Illinois Democrats running for U.S. Senate are working to distinguish themselves from their rivals as they meet for the first time this election season.

U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, state Sen. Napoleon Harris and former Chicago Urban League CEO Andrea Zopp talked up their backgrounds as they spoke Monday before the Chicago Tribune editorial board.

Duckworth says she's the daughter of an immigrant who understands the needs of struggling families because her own family relied on food stamps.

Harris says his childhood on Chicago's South Side was tough, but a good education helped him go on to play in the NFL and become a businessman.

Zopp is touting her broad experience in business, as a prosecutor and helping improve urban communities.

The winner will likely face Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk.
