Illinois school cancels classes due to bomb threat

Posted: Updated:

The Harrisburg School District canceled classes on Wednesday after a bomb threat was found in a middle school.

Superintendent Mike Gauch says a janitor found a bomb threat written on a bathroom stall in the middle school around 10:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Illinois State Police were called to do a sweep of the school, but couldn't get to Harrisburg until around 3:00 a.m.

Troopers were in Springfield preparing for President Obama's visit which is why it too so long for the bomb squad to arrive at the school.

A sweep was made at all the schools, but it wasn't finished until it was almost time for buses to start their routes.

Gauch says they then decided to cancel school for the day.

An investigation is ongoing.

Classes will resume on Thursday.
