Finding puppy love through doggy speed dating

MURPHYSBORO, IL -

A local animal shelter is hoping to streamline your search through doggy speed dating. It’s the first time they’ve tried it, but organizers are hoping you’ll leave with a new companion.

Brittany Morgan at Wright-Way Rescue in Murphysboro, Illinois, is prepping Jewel and a dozen other dogs there for their Valentine’s Day dates.

"She's the kind of dog you'd take on long walks on the beach, a few candlelit dinners. She loves the Milk Bones for dessert,” Morgan said.

The shelter hopes that, through the event, they’ll help dogs strike a match with owners.

"They'll get a personal card detailing the dog and a little bit of information about them. And they'll also have a scorecard to rate the dog on temperament, appearance and their chemistry. The dog with the highest score, they'll have the opportunity to adopt," Morgan said. You get three minutes with every dog to find out if you have a perfect match.

People have been so excited about seeing the eligible bachelors and bachelorettes on social media that they’re adopting a lot of the dogs ahead of time, Morgan said.

"I don't think we've ever had that problem before. It's pretty rare that we're calling local animal shelters and saying, 'Hey, we need some adults,' Normally, we're asking for puppies. And they're offering us adults, and we don't have enough space," she said.

Because it’s the adult dogs that really need Cupid’s help.

"Puppies are amazing. Puppies are sweet, but these adults are the ones that have the story. The adults are the ones who have been through it and really need a second chance,” Morgan said.

She says this Valentine’s Day, they’re hoping to see all the dating dogs find forever homes.

Doggy speed dating runs from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Pure Pet in Carbondale. Volunteers who want to help with the dogs are welcome and asked to arrive at 10:30 a.m. All adoption paperwork can be done at Pure Pet or online by clicking here.

Dogs are $250 to adopt, but they come fully spayed or neutered, fully healthy and up to date on all vaccines and checkups.
