Scalia's death triggers debate over successor

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON (AP) -

President Barack Obama is pledging to nominate a successor to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia "in due time." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans say that Obama, as a lame duck, should not fill the vacancy but leave it to the next president.

Meanwhile, Scalia's colleagues are grieving his death yesterday at age 79. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she and Scalia "were best buddies" for more than 30 years. Justice Clarence Thomas said, "It is hard to imagine the court without my friend."

A procession of law enforcement officers escorted Scalia's body to a funeral home in El Paso, Texas, early today.

The funeral home says tentative plans call for Scalia's body to be flown back home to northern Virginia on Tuesday.
