Debra Cartwright: Coloring the Truth of Our Beauty
Debra Cartwright is a 28-year-old artist known for using watercolors in her pieces depicting black women of all different shapes and skins tones.
All of her pieces emphasize a woman's natural hair, something she does intentionally because she says she is proud of her own, natural hair.
She says she uses watercolors because it goes along with the message she is trying to get out. She's trying to overcome the heaviness in the media that often portrays black women as angry and militant.
