Kentucky House passes bill targeting mugshot websites

Posted: Updated:

Kentucky state Rep. Gerald Watkins of Paducah says a bill he sponsored prohibits commercial use of mug shots. That proposal unanimously passed in the Kentucky House of Representatives Friday.

The bill targets websites that publish jail mugshots and then demand money to remove the photos. The bill would allow fines to be imposed against offenders. Watkins says the bill would allow courts to charge commercial companies $100 for the first 30 days, $250 for the next 30 days and $500 after that.

The bill goes to a senate committee next. Watkins proposed a similar bill two years ago, but this time he says he has "good partisan support."
