Families in Metropolis, Illinois, looking for a new home may soon have a new option. But, before it can happen, a portion of the city would need to be rezoned.
A local developer submitted plans to build on 10 plots. The property is in area known as the Kennedy addition on the east side of town.
The developer, who also built the neighborhood next door, Pheasant Cove, says he has big plans for the plots. Businesses say they see the potential development as needed growth.
Dr. Russell B. Jones with River's Edge Veterinary Clinic knows pets are family. "Sometimes I know who's barking in the lobby when they come in," he says.
But Jones says he can't care for the furry family members when there isn't a place to which families can move. That's why Jones says he'd rather see the empty lots across the street rezoned and developed.
"People are probably going to come with their pets," Jones says. "That means more business for us."
Rezoning and potential development on this land hasn't been finalized, though. That still needs to be approved by city leaders.
Chad Murray, the city's zoning coordinator, says they will listen to public comment and make a decision. Murray says he believes building on those empty lots will mean positive growth for the city, but he knows making those changes could mean changes for taxes and property values.
"We do our best to try to maintain and keep property values and maintenance up," Murray.
As for Jones, he says any new families are a good thing.
Murray said the city rezoned its outdated maps in 2013. The city will hear public comment on rezoning the 10 plots Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
