Shawnee school district gets funds after sale of power plant's back taxes

WOLF LAKE, IL -

Shawnee Community Unit School District 84 in southern Illinois has $1.4 million more in its account after a legal battle involving its largest taxpayer, Grand Tower Energy.

In December we reported Grand Tower hadn't paid its bill since Jackson County denied its request to reduce its property taxes in March. At a tax sale in January, Kenny Rochman's company bought the back taxes.

If the plant doesn't pay those taxes with interest in three years, Rochman owns the property. The plant's owners have asked once again for a reduction in taxes. After being denied again, they appealed to Illinois' property tax appeal board.
