KEVIL, KY -

UPDATE: Kentucky State Police arrested two people they believe are responsible for an assault reported in McCracken County.

KSP arrested Jerry Compton and Shranda Smith in Ballard County Friday. The two face multiple felony assault and drug charges. Robert Pena told McCracken County sheriff's deputies he was assaulted on the side of the highway, but that turned out not to be true.

The sheriff's office charged Pena with filing a false report, and turned the case over to Kentucky State Police. A Kentucky State Police spokesperson says they charged Compton with assaulting Pena. We don't know exactly what happened, the sequence of events are part of an ongoing investigation.

But McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden says his patrol officers searched stretches of Interstate-24 for several hours; a detective investigated two to three days trying to figure out who assaulted Pena.

Hayden says this investigation tied up their time and resources. "We had a guy who reported that he stopped to help some folks who were broke down and basically was beaten and robbed, so we are concerned about that, obviously. The community is concerned about that," he says

A Kentucky State Police spokesperson told us Compton and Smith were in a relationship. As for whether any of the three will face more charges, police are still investigating.
