First case of Zika virus reported in Kentucky

Posted: Updated:
FRANKFORT, Ky -

The first case of the Zika virus has been reported in Kentucky.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health says a man tested positive for the disease on March 9.

The man had recently returned to the Louisville area after traveling to a Central American county where the virus is circulating.

The man was tested after he showed Zika related symptoms. He is doing well and is expected to fully recover from the illness.

Zika is primarily spread through the bite of a mosquito that carries the virus. Zika is not known to be in the mosquito population in Kentucky or any other part of the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging anyone who is traveling to countries experiencing Zika outbreaks to take steps to protect themselves from the disease.
