No tax hike in Massac County causes setback in courthouse repairs

MASSAC COUNTY, IL -

Commissioners are calling it a huge setback after people in Massac County, Illinois, voted not to raise the local sales tax by 1 percent.

The increase would have covered repair costs to the county courthouse in Metropolis.

County Commissioner Jerel Childers says now they'll have to borrow around $280,000 from the bank to fix some much-needed repairs.

He believes the increase didn't pass because of the way it was worded on the ballot.

"I'm upset, but the people have spoken," says Childers. "I think if they would have understood better, maybe they would have had a change of heart."

Childers says if they do decide to put the proposal back on the ballot, they'll write it so it's easier to understand.
