SCOTT COUNTY, Mo. -

A Sikeston man was arrested and charged after police say he displayed a handgun at a school.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office says 45-year-old Jeffrey Grubbs was volunteering at a 4H activity at Kelly School Monday evening.

Grubbs has a CCW permit and during the event allegedly used the handle of a handgun to push a tack into a piece of wood.

Grubbs admitted to initially attempting to do so with a loaded handgun, but realized that was unsafe. He then unloaded the handgun and continued to use it on the tack.

Deputies say two children age 6 and 9 were in the immediate area at the time.

School officials called the Scott County Sheriff's Office after finding out about the incident.

Grubbs was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with unlawful use of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was released by the court on a criminal summons.
