Restriction planned for U.S. 51 Ohio River 'Cairo' Bridge

WICKLIFFE, Ky -

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a contractor plans to place a daytime lane and load width restriction on the U.S. 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge starting next week.

The restrictions are planned to begin Wednesday, April 6, according to KYTC spokesman Keith Todd.

Todd says the contractor will place a lane and 10-foot load width restriction on the bridge during daylight hours so inspection access ladders can be repaired and replaced at several points along the bridge structure. The work zone will be taken down at night.

Drivers should be alert for one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers, Todd says. He says delays should generally be less than five minutes, but occasional delays of longer duration may be required while equipment is moved and placed of to facilitate the required work.

Todd says the contractor plans to work 10 hours a day for eight days, then take six days off. That will allow days for movement of farm equipment and other wide loads when the work zone is down.

The bridge carries U.S. 60 and U.S. 62 across the Ohio River between Wickliffe, Kentucky, and Cairo, Illinois.  It connects with the U.S. 60/U.S. 62 Mississippi River Bridge to Bird’s Point, Missouri, at the southern tip of Illinois.

The bridge is at Ohio River navigation mile point 980.4.
