Illinoisans raising awareness in Child Abuse Prevention Month

Posted: Updated:
CARTERVILLE, Ill. -

Across the country, 702,000 children were abused or neglected in 2014. Friday marks the start of Child Abuse Prevention Month in Illinois, and a local foundation says awareness is the first step in lowering that number.

Of the 702,000, 75 percent were neglected, 17 percent were physically abused, and eight percent were sexually abused. The most tragic results of abuse is death. Two years ago 1,580 children died due to abuse, most from neglect.

From state's attorneys to state troopers, the crowd at Carterville College learned why it's so important to recognize the signs of abuse, then report it.

"I think child abuse is a serious issue, even if it's just a few kids. But there's not just a few kids here, it's a huge issue here," Perry Jackson Child Advocacy Center Director Betti Mucha says.

Mucha says reporting the signs of abuse is the easiest way to protect children.
