Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Forest Service says it has planned prescribed burns at Shawnee National Forest in Illinois between April 2 and April 5, if the weather permits.

You may see smoke if you are near one of the areas being burned Locations of larger areas that may be burned are:

  • About eight miles east of Harrisburg in Saline County (about 1,200 acres)
  • About three miles northeast of Simpson in Johnson and Pope counties (about 600 acres)
  • About four miles northeast of Dixon Springs State Park in Pope County (about 700 acres)
  • About nine miles north of Golconda in Pope County (about 1,500 acres)
  • About eight miles west of Murphysboro in Jackson County (about 500 acres)

The forest service says fire personnel will carefully monitor smoke generated during the prescribed burns. You can expect most of the smoke to be visible in the afternoon and dissipate by late afternoon. It will probably be most noticeable near Equity, New Burnside, Simpson, Eddyville, Golconda and Ava, Illinois.
