Judge considering whether to release lawyer accused of fraud before trial

Posted: Updated:
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -

Federal prosecutors are portraying a flamboyant Kentucky lawyer as a flight risk who should stay locked up while awaiting trial on charges of fraudulently obtaining more than $600 million in federal disability payments for clients.

Eric C. Conn's attorney countered that he always has returned home to eastern Kentucky after traveling abroad and would stay to fight his charges.

A federal judge said Thursday that he'll rule later on whether Conn should be released while awaiting trial.

Conn is at the center of an 18-count indictment alleging an intricate scheme to fraudulently obtain disability and health care benefits.

A FBI special agent recounted statements by former Conn employees who said the attorney indicated he would flee if necessary to avoid prosecution. Defense attorney Abbe Lowell tried to discredit the employees.
