LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -

An Internal Revenue Service investigator and federal prosecutor are warning the public against fraud that occurs around income tax time.

U.S. Attorney John E. Kuhn Jr. of the Western District of Kentucky and IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Tracey D. Montano of Nashville, Tennessee, spoke out in Louisville on Monday urging the public to avoid dishonest tax return preparers and fraudulent schemes.

Kuhn and Montano reminded taxpayers they are ultimately responsible for the content of their returns and should be diligent in ensuring the returns even if prepared by a professional.

Montano also warned of phone scams and "phishing" scams in fake emails or websites.

The filing deadline is a week away. For assistance, individuals can contact the IRS at 800-829-1040 and businesses can call 800-829-4933.
