Hotel opening in downtown Paducah in time for AQS QuiltWeek

PADUCAH, Ky -

Quilters are showing up for Paducah's AQS QuiltWeek as early as this weekend. There are lots of options for hotels near the interstate but some guests are getting the opportunity to stay downtown.

The 1857 Hotel, which is off Kentucky Avenue near Market House Theatre, is completely booked for AQS QuiltWeek. Most of the rooms are already reserved for next year.

Owner Paul Gourieux says he started taking calls for reservations as soon as word got out.

“What we're really trying to do is bring something that's unique and different to the city,” Gourieux said.

Gourieux and Jorge Martinez own two local restaurants: Tribeca and JP’s Bar & Grill. Their next project was restoring a historic building from the 1800s in downtown Paducah.

“(We wanted to) create a setting that really does fit within the 1800s, and the times that the downtown area was so great,” Gourieux said.

The process took a year and a half.

“I’m relieved, to say the least, and terribly excited,” Gourieux said.

Gourieux and Martinez applied for state and federal historic tax credits to help with the costs. They’re in the final stages of the process. Melinda Winchester with Paducah Main Street has been helping them in the process.

They're also promoting local talent by incorporating different artwork throughout the hotel that'll change on a regular basis.

“The idea really is to always use work in relation to the artists in the community. This space lends itself perfectly to that,” Gourieux said.

The 10-room boutique hotel is targeted toward tourists and those close to home. One of the first people to book an event, Basil Drossos, lives nearby.

“We thought we'd help celebrate the inauguration of the hotel,” Drossos said.

He describes the place as a tastefully done project that’ll uplift downtown.

“Those people who have lived in Paducah all their life or many years — that know the businesses and the stores that were in these buildings many, many years ago — saw how the decline occurred and now to see this type of a reinvestment will be exciting,” Drossos said.

The 1857 Hotel's grand opening is Friday. They’re holding a ribbon cutting with the Chamber of Commerce at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
