After being held almost three weeks in southern Illinois, Joseph Cunningham was brought back to Marshall County by Detective Matt Hilbrecht. Cunningham was charged in the shooting death of Gary Lambert in late March.

"Certainly not a case we have often in Marshall County," Hilbrecht said to Local 6.

It's a murder case we're now learning more about. Charging documents say Cunningham confessed to Jefferson County, Illinois, deputies. Cunningham said he shot Lambert outside a home in Possum Trot after trying to sell Lambert guns.

Even with a confession, Hilbrecht said his work isn't done. "Still working on establishing a timeline, and we have quite a bit of evidence still at the lab for analysis," he told Local 6's Robert Bradfield.

That analysis includes DNA testing from Lambert's white Dodge Durango. The documents say deputies found blood and "what appeared to be human tissue" in the front seat. "It'll be quite some time. That's kind of lengthy process. Sometimes in a case like this you can expect a six month turnover," Hilbrecht said.

In the meantime, Cunningham said, "Keep me in your prayers," when asked if he wanted to send his family a message.

Cunningham is currently in the Marshall County Jail, held without bond.
