Here are six things to know for today.

Nine people are dead and more than 800 are injured after a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that hit an island near Japan. Japan's meteorological agency says aftershocks could continue for up to a week.

A Texas deputy constable remains in critical condition this morning, but is expected to make a full recovery. Alden Clopton was shot six times in an ambush attack on Wednesday night.

A public viewing will be held today for former NFL star Will Smith. It will be at the New Orleans Saints training facility. Smith was killed over the weekend. The suspect, Cardell Hayes, has been charged with second degree murder.

Weather experts predict an average hurricane season this year. Meteorologists expect 12 named storms this year with five likely to form to hurricane strength. The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th.

If you're scrambling to get your taxes done, you have some extra time this year. Tax returns are due on Monday the 18th instead of today. Keep in mind, your return must be postmarked by the 18th.
