Kentucky unemployment rate increases in some counties

Posted: Updated:

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits nationally might be at a 40 year low, but unemployment rates throughout the majority of Kentucky actually rose.

According to the Kentucky Career Center, 65 counties in the commonwealth have seen an increase in unemployment rates in the past year.

In McCracken County the rate has gone up from 6.2% to 6.5%.

Carlisle County is up to 7.6% from 5.6%.

Ballard County has seen the largest spike from 7.2% to 9.9%.

Hickman County remained the same at 6%.

Fulton County dropped from 7.5% to 7.2%.

Despite the rise in numbers in Kentucky, national unemployment is at the lowest rate since November of 1973. That's according to the Labor Department.

The total number of people applying for benefits has dropped 7.6% from a year ago.

Analysts say employers are hanging on to their workers and may be looking to hire more which is a positive sign for an economy that started this year on the sluggish side.
