Two children injured in Graves County bus crash

Two children were injured in a wreck involving a school bus in Graves County.

Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon says there was a school bus crash around 3:45 p.m. Thursday on Kentucky 385 between Cuba and Pilot Oak.

The bus had been headed north when, the driver told deputies, the right tires of the bus dropped off of the right side of the roadway as it was coming around a curve. That caused the bus to travel onto the shoulder of the road. It continued forward and hit a guide wire for a utility pole and a driveway culvert.

Deputies say the driver, 43-year-old Shyla Chalker of Mayfield, was the able to guide the bus back onto the roadway but over corrected, causing the bus to drive across both lanes of traffic and run off of the left shoulder of the road. There, the bus hit an earth embankment and a fence before coming to rest in the road ditch.

Redmon says two children were taken by Mayfield/Graves County EMS to Jackson Purchase Medical Center  for injuries described as not life threatening. He says one may have a broken leg and the other complained of shoulder pain.

The sheriff's department says a third student was taken by his parents to Jackson Purchase Medical Center a couple of hours after the collision for a possible head injury.

KY 385 was shut down for about an hour while the scene was cleared.
