Testimony given in Graves County court on Wednesday revealed 83-year-old Linda Pittman died two days before her body was found.
Her grandson, Michael Castleman, is charged with murder and robbery in her death. He appeared in Graves County District Court on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.
The lead detective in the case, Steve Hassell, took the stand. He explained what his investigation found.
Hassell said neighbors and friends of Linda Pittman told him that Castleman had a history of stealing her prescription pills.
Detectives tracked Castleman down after Pittman's body was found on April 14. Then, he allegedly admitted to getting into an argument with her two days earlier over her pills. Hassell says Castleman told investigators he hit Pittman in the face and left her.
"He said he was out of his mind. Those were his words exactly. He was out of his mind on Xanax. He said he went back into the TV room to watch TV. He went to bed and didn't check on her," Hassell said.
Hassell says the day after the altercation, April 13, Castleman left the home without ever checking on Pittman. Hassell says that altercation caused her death.
The sheriff's office is still waiting for the autopsy report.
The case was sent to grand jury, which is set for June 9.
