Remington to close Mayfield plant

Posted: Updated:

Remington Outdoor Company announced Thursday that it plans to close its Mayfield firearms operations. The closure affects roughly 200 employees.

The announcement sent Thursday says the closure is part of "an effort to become more organizationally focused and competitive."

The company says the Mayfield plant will be consolidated into Remington's Huntsville, Alabama, operation. It says the actual plant closure and transition to Huntsville will take several months. The two plants are about 250 miles apart.

In part, the company said:

"The Mayfield facility has been in operation for nearly 20 years and although there is a great team at this location the strategic decision to consolidate centered on three competitively oriented areas: Logistical proximity and freight synergies Organizational synergy and focus with engineering, sales and marketing Facility overhead leverage and streamlining."

Remington says employees will be offered severance pay and outplacement services.

Graves County Economic Development President Ryan Drane sent the following statement Thursday night:

"Local elected officials and the economic development team are taking immediate action to support the employees of Remington.  An event is being scheduled for the employees next week to outline a path forward, so they can begin to prepare for future employment at other local companies.  We will share details of the event as soon as they are available.
