Group offers job services to Remington employees facing layoffs

GRAVES Co, Ky -

The comfort of working for a company many years can make it even more difficult when looking for a new job. The West Kentucky Workforce Board is helping make that process easier for about 200 employees facing layoffs at a Remington plant in Graves County.

Earlier this month the company announced the plant is consolidating into Remington’s Huntsville, Alabama, operation. The company says it’s in an effort to “become more organizationally focused and competitive."

Monday afternoon, Remington employee Lonnie Buckingham sat with about 50 other employees at West Kentucky Rural Electric to find out how the West Kentucky Workforce Board can help them prepare for new jobs before the plant closes.

“It's the big talk of the plant, you know, everybody going to these meetings and trying to see what is available,” Buckingham said.

Everyone at the rapid response session is being provided with the tools to hopefully help them through the layoff from books on budgeting to how to file your unemployment insurance benefits.

Workforce Program Coordinator Juliet Allen says they also can provide help with finding a new job, resumes, job searching on the internet or social media, new training, adult education, and workers with disabilities for free through the state or federally funded programs.

Allen wants these workers to feel they have support.

“Know who's there to help them and that they don't feel like they are approaching this alone,” Allen said.

That's a relief for now, that Buckingham hopes will lead to a solution in the future.

“It's great that they are willing to help out as many people as they possibly can to get back on their feet,” Buckingham said.

Monday's rapid response session was the third and final one. If you still want help, you can contact West Kentucky Workforce for a private session. Their number is 270-886-9484. If you want more information on the services they provide, you can also checkout their website by clicking here.

The group is working on setting up a job fair. A date will be set after they've coordinated with area employers.
