An emergency official tells Local 6 that 19 people are trapped in a cave in Kentucky.
Hart County Emergency Management Director Kerry McDaniel tells us 17 civilians and two Horse Cave Police Officers remain trapped in Hidden River Cave. Around 10 a.m. Thursday, 21 people went into the cave in two separate groups. When rain started pouring, they became trapped.
McDaniel says four escaped.
The two Horse Cave Police officers went into the cave to rescue the trapped civilians, but they have lost contact with the officers since then.
McDaniel says the situation remains dangerous as it continues to rain and no one is entering the cave right now. He says it could be a 12 to 14 hour wait until they crews take their next action.
Two dive teams, one cave dive team, three fire departments, one rescue squad, the Horse Cave Police Department, emergency departments from two other counties and Kentucky State Police have all been called in to assist.
