UPDATE: A search for a possible plane crash in southern Illinois has been called off. Emergency crews began the search after getting a signal from an airplane beacon.
Alexander County Sheriff Tim Brown says there may be a low battery one of the beacons on a plane at the Cairo Regional Airport that caused it to send an emergency signal.

Alexander County Sheriff Tim Brown tells us his office was notified that an emergency beacon for an aircraft was activated near Cairo Thursday afternoon.
The sheriff’s department and other emergency responders are searching the area around Cairo, but Brown says nothing has been found at this point.
