PADUCAH, KY -
Heavy afternoon rain didn't dampen the spirits of those involved in the 8th Annual A&K Construction Sunrise Children's Services Golf Outing at the Country Club of Paducah.
The Thursday outing involved 35, four person golf teams with proceeds benefiting Sunrise Children's Services. The agency provides support services and programs throughout Kentucky. Sunrise is the state's oldest and largest child services agency caring for what the organization calls "the most vulnerable kids" in the state.
Specifically, Sunrise gives children in a crisis situation a safe place to stay, nutritious food and a sense of security.
For the 8th year in a row, A&K Construction served as Presenting Sponsor of the event.
"It's all about sponsors. It's about the corporate sponsors that pay a fee to play in the tournament and it's the Who's Who of corporate folks in Paducah and they've consistently done it year in and year out. We've got a waiting list of folks that want to play," A&K Construction President Ken Hunt said.
Since its inception, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the cause.
"Not exactly sure what the numbers are but we've raised over three hundred thousand dollars for Sunrise Children's Services so we're very proud of that," Hunt added. "One-hundred percent of the money goes to the charity. We get 90-percent of the expenses covered outside what we raise, so it's a good fundraiser for (Sunrise)."
According to the organization's website, Sunrise is a home for children who have been abused and neglected. Children whose lives have been scarred by unspeakable physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and who have been removed from their homes.
"It's easy to give kids, kids who are having trouble in life, especially through no fault of their own. So, it's not a hard sale and it does feel great. It's a wonderful thing that Sunrise does for these kids and if they didn't do it, there's a void out there and they do an excellent job with it."
The golf outing was eventually cut short because of the rain but participants and sponsors said they're already looking forward to next year's event.
